Chia and Flax Deliciousness!

photo (8)I wanted to share a product I recently discovered at Whole Foods.  Decadent Blend Chia and Flax Seed by Spectrum Essentials is an easy way to get Omega 3s, fiber, and antioxidants  It is a blend of organic ground chia seeds, flax seeds, cocoa, and dried coconut. It does have a small amount of added sugar but I think it’s a really great way to sneak some extra goodness into your baking and smoothies.  I love watching my kids inhale something that I know is soooo good for them!  This can easily be added to pancakes, waffles,  or baked goods. I made a smoothie this morning with 2 big handfuls of spinach, 1 stalk celery, 1 banana, 1 handful frozen pineapple, 1.5 c water, and 1 T Decadent Blend Chia and Flax Seed.  It was delicious and I can’t wait to try some other combinations!  Let me know if you come up with any new recipes using this product!

Great Day at the Western Wake Farmers’ Market!

Thanks to all of you who stopped by to say hello on Saturday morning.  We truly enjoyed chatting with all of you!  Our Green Monster Smoothie was given a thumbs up by the majority (about 80%!) and we were happy that everyone was willing to give it a try.

For those of you tuned in to the Olympics last night, did you see double amputee Oscar Pistorius downing his own version of a green smoothie?  He truly believes getting his greens everyday helps to boost his performance.   As the first disabled person to ever compete in the Olympics, I’d say those greens are working in his favor!  What an inspiration!

Here is the recipe for our Green Monster Smoothie:

2 handfuls spinach

1 banana

1 c frozen mango

1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

2 T flax meal

1/2 to 1 c cold water

2 cups ice

Blend and enjoy!

Peace and greens,

Melissa

Oh Cherry, Cherry!

Are you looking for a food to help aid in the recovery of sore joints and muscles from all of the new activities you have been trying this summer?  Try cherries!  Cherries are a super fruit that are packed with anti oxidants called anthocyanins which are known to reduce inflammation.  Because of their anti inflammatory benefits, cherries can help reduce pain and joint soreness to the effect of taking an anti inflammatory drug.  These anti inflammatory benefits also aide in reducing heart disease and cancer.  Cherries also are one of the few fruits that contain melatonin which helps regulate your body’s sleep cycle.  All great benefits when you are out and active this summer!  Michigan is the largest producer of tart cherries, which contain the highest amounts of the beneficial anti oxidants so I will be gobbling them up while I am here.  Sweet or tart cherries are both beneficial but they wont be here for long so get them while you can.   More great bennys:
