Another Reason To STOP Drinking Soda!

Please read this if you are still drinking soda!  This study was done using two cans of soda per day. A can of soda is 12 oz. That’s 24 oz of soda per day used in this study. If you’re driving through McDonald’s to grab a medium soda (21 oz…) or a large (32 oz) read on to learn what you could be doing to your kidneys.  Scary to think what we are doing to the tiny people in our lives when we think we are “treating” them to a soda!

Chia and Flax Deliciousness!

photo (8)I wanted to share a product I recently discovered at Whole Foods.  Decadent Blend Chia and Flax Seed by Spectrum Essentials is an easy way to get Omega 3s, fiber, and antioxidants  It is a blend of organic ground chia seeds, flax seeds, cocoa, and dried coconut. It does have a small amount of added sugar but I think it’s a really great way to sneak some extra goodness into your baking and smoothies.  I love watching my kids inhale something that I know is soooo good for them!  This can easily be added to pancakes, waffles,  or baked goods. I made a smoothie this morning with 2 big handfuls of spinach, 1 stalk celery, 1 banana, 1 handful frozen pineapple, 1.5 c water, and 1 T Decadent Blend Chia and Flax Seed.  It was delicious and I can’t wait to try some other combinations!  Let me know if you come up with any new recipes using this product!

National Oatmeal Day Tomorrow

Oatmeal doesn’t get all the recognition it deserves these days.  With “quinoa” this and “farro” that, oatmeal has sadly been left behind.  Well, it’s time to celebrate oatmeal again (who knew it had its own day??).  Here is a great article that outlines the benefits of adding oatmeal to your diet and includes a few yummy recipes to try as well.

Switch to Himalayan Rock Salt

This is a great article that should convince us that it really is time to give up the fast and processed food.  I always think of the unhealthy fat and calories being the biggest problem, but now there is evidence that the salt found in these foods is linked to autoimmune diseases(MS, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and many more).  Here is just an excerpt from the article on the True Activist site. I have also included a link if you are interested in reading the entire article.  It does a great job of explaining why processed salt is not such a good choice for our health.

Killing A Cold Quickly!

photoI never knew it was possible to cut a cold duration to less than half but I’m now a believer. A few years ago when Oprah and Dr. Oz were singing the praises of the neti pot I ran to Whole Foods and bought one.  I’m sure you’ve seen one, that little white ceramic pot that you are supposed to stick up one nostril and then watch the magic as the water then drips out the opposite nostril.  Well, I looked at the box on my bathroom counter for at least a week and read the directions at least a dozen times. I even got into position and stuck the spout in the right place. Couldn’t do it.  Was totally grossed out at the thought. (Returned the pot to Whole Foods and got a full refund even after I told them it had sort of been used:)

So, with all the sickness in the schools right now, my kids were home a few different days in the last two weeks. I was rocking along,  so proud of myself for staying healthy. Got everyone back to school, started to resume the million Christmas shopping errands on my list,  and BAM…I got a BAD cold. The kind where your head feels like it has grown double in size and all you want to do is curl up in pjs and close your eyes.  That’s when Andrea marched me into Target and told me to buy the NeilMed Sinus Rinse Kit.  It is not a pot, but a squeeze bottle.  She promised me my cold would be MUCH better in a day or two if I used it. I was super skeptical. In the past, when I got a cold this bad it would take at least a week to be over it and feeling good without medication.  Something about the squeeze bottle seemed less scary than the ceramic pot, and remember, I was feeling miserable and would have tried just about anything.  The first try was scary and funny at the same time even though the directions are simple and easy to follow.  I forgot myself and breathed in at the wrong moment…almost drowned myself!  Well, I might be exaggerating a little, but it was kind of yucky. Of course, most people would stay focused during such a task and NOT breathe in at the wrong time.  Anyhow, the second time was much easier and by the third time I felt like an old pro.  The instant relief is a great motivator:)

It’s a miracle I tell you!  The instructions say it can be used up to 4 times per day. I used it right away when I got it home and again before bed. I woke up feeling at least 70% better. The next day I used it morning, noon, and night. The following day my cold was all but gone.  No sleep-inducing meds, no days spent in bed.

I’m planning on getting my kids to try this out as well. The research shows it can truly help to ward off cold and flu bugs.  Just imagine all the bacteria that ends up in your nose during this time of year. If you are consistently flushing it out there is much less chance of  getting sick.  Healthy Holidays sound like a welcome idea to me!

What’s the big deal about GMOs, Part 2

So, what are GMOs doing once they’re inside our bodies?

Evidence suggests that the huge rise in food allergies is due to the rise in GMOs. Think about your children’s classmates….how many are allergic to something?  My second graders each have a handful of kids with allergies in their classes, my son included.  I remember ONE child in my WHOLE elementary school with a peanut allergy!  What is going on here?  Beginning in 1996 bacteria, viruses, and other genes have been inserted into our soy, corn, canola, and cottonseed plants.  These plants bring on allergies because they have created a new protein that the body doesn’t recognize.  Our body then releases antibodies  into the bloodstream to fight this invader.  A typical allergic reaction occurs.  In extreme cases, it results in life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

GMOS have been shown to increase the body’s toxicity.  The more toxins in your body, the higher chance of obesity, cancer, and many other diseases.  Many researchers are beginning to see the link between GMOs and autism, asthma, and eczema in small children. Gastrointestinal conditions such as Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and ulcerative colitis have risen since 1996. Harvard researchers discovered how GMOs are linked to disease of the gut.  To read about this study click here

In lab tests, livestock ingesting GMOs became infertile in a matter of weeks.  Some of these animals have also become very ill and died very quickly.  So the GMOs aren’t working out very well as feed for the cows and pigs, but hey, maybe the humans will fare better?  Does this sound a little risky to you?  MUCH, MUCH more research needs to be done by unbiased labs to find out exactly what is happening when we eat genetically modified foods!

As of right now, our pantries and refrigerators are full of GMOs and we have no labels on any packaging to warn us of this.  If you want to read a good article about the links between GMOs and disease click here
