Food? – by Shel Silverstein

I was settin’ at this restaurant

When the waiter came up and said, “What do you want?”

I looked at the menu–it looked so nice

Till he said, “Let me give you a little advice.”

He said, “Spaghetti and potatoes got too much starch,

Pork chops and sausage are bad for your heart.

There’s hormones in chicken and beef and veal,

Bowl of ravioli is a dead man’s meal.

Bread’s got preservatives, there’s nitrites in ham,

Artificial coloring in jellies and jam.

Stay away from doughnuts, run away from pie,

Pepperoni pizza is a sure way to die.

Sugar’s gonna rot your teeth and make you put on weight,

Artificial sweetener’s got cyclamates.

Eggs are high cholesterol, too much fat in cheese,

Coffee ruins your kidneys and so do teas.

Fish got too much mercury, red meat is poison,

Salt’s gonna send your blood pressure risin’.

Hot dogs and bologna got deadly red dyes,

Vegetables and fruits are sprayed with pesticides.”

So I said, “What can I eat that’s gonna make me last?”

He said, “ A small drink of water in a sterilized glass.”

And then he stopped and he thought for a minute,

And said, “Never mind the water–there’s carcinogens in it.”

So I got up from the table and walked out in the street,

Realizin’ there was absolutely nothing to eat.

So I haven’t eaten for a month and I don’t feel too fine,

But I know that I’ll be healthy for a long, long time.

GMOs Part 4, Reading PLU stickers

I know I promised this on Friday but life got in the way:)  Sorry for the delay!

PLU codes are applied to fruit, vegetables, herbs, and nuts although the sticky labels are normally only found on fruit.  The codes are 4 or 5 digits long.  Fruit is divided into 3 categories: conventional, organic, and genetically modified.  4 digit codes mean that the produce has been conventionally grown, most likely with pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, and grown in nutrient-depleted soil.

5 digit codes begin with an 8 or a 9.  If the code begins with an 8, the produce has been genetically modified.  If the code begins with a 9, the produce has been grown organically without the use of harmful pesticides or fertilizers.

Andrea and I recently made a trip to the supermarket to see just how many types of produce we could find that had been genetically modified and we came up empty-handed.  At first we were relieved.  Then we realized that the far bigger problem was in the boxes and bags lining the shelves in the remainder of the market.  So many products that contain corn, corn syrup, or corn oil, soybean oil, or any soy derivative, cottonseed oil, or aspartame! These are the large industrial crops that are being genetically modified and added to our food supply without our knowledge.  Unless it is labeled “organic”, there is no way to know what lurks inside.  There is no PLU number to help us decipher what we are eating.  This is just not right!

Please sign the “Just Label It” petition if you haven’t already done so.  The petition is at least a start in the right direction.

Sweet Potato Applesauce – A Sprouting Souls Recipe

We had a great morning at the Western Wake Farmers’ Market! Thank you to all of you that stopped out to say hello, ask us questions and taste our yummy Sweet Potato Applesauce. As I promised this morning here is the recipe, so easy, so yummy. Sorry we ran out! The kids did love it, we had a few that came back for 3rds 🙂

This is a great way to start with a food that your kids like and add something new in a……shall we say “low key introductory way”. So here’s the recipe:

4 cups of apples that have been peeled, cored and chopped ( I used a combination of Macintosh and Ginger Crisp)

1 cup water

1 medium large sweet potato that has been wrapped in foil and baked at 400 for an hour (about 1 cup cooked)

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Place chopped apples in a pot with 1 cup water and cook on medium heat until apples are soft, about 20 minutes. Turn off burner and let sit for about 20-30 minutes. Peel the skin off of the baked potato and place it into the pot with the apples. Using a potato masher or immersion blender, combine the two ingredients, add cinnamon and combine until smooth. This tastes great warm or cold. This recipe makes about 5 servings so if you want to have some for later, double the batch.

Thanks again for coming out to visit us at the farmers market. We will be back in November with a yummy squash recipe, so hope to see you then!

Check out our services tab above if you are interested in getting your whole family on the right track to a Super Immunity flu season. Mention that you saw us at the Western Wake Farmers’ Market and receive a 20% discount on the 30 Day Jump Start just until the end of September.

GMOs, Part 3…What Can We Do?

I know it’s been pretty depressing this week with all the GMO posts but there are some things we can do to protect ourselves.  First, buy organic whenever possible.  Just last week there was some information in the media about it not being all that important to buy organic.  Interestingly, there is evidence that this study was done to undermine organic farmers and the initiative to label GMOs.  It was backed by big GMO advocates.  Unfortunately, buying organic is the only way to know for certain that what you are eating is not genetically modified.

Try to find substitutes for your favorite boxed or bagged snacks if they are not already organic.  For example, one of the products almost always in my pantry is a box of Nabisco Wheat Thins.   I’m pretty sure that the soybean oil purchased by Nabisco is made with genetically modified soybeans.  My kids LOVE Wheat Thins so I’m going shopping on Saturday for a replacement. First I will look at Trader Joe’s because all of their products are GMO free and usually much less costly than Whole Foods.  Whatever I can’t replace at TJs I will most likely be able to find at Whole Foods.  The major supermarket chains also have their own brand of organic cereal and crackers.

Second, cut diet soda out of your life completely!  Aspartame, the fake sweetener used in all diet Pepsi and diet Coke products is created by using genetically modified BACTERIA! Yuck!  If you love your diet soda, it may take a few days to give it up; aspartame is also known to be addictive!  (BTW, don’t replace it with regular soda made with high-fructose CORN syrup!  Corn is one of the most genetically engineered crops!)  Aspartame is also found in most sugar-free products like chewing gum, hard candies, and yogurt.  Read the label on any “diet” food like Weight Watchers or Snackwells and you will probably find aspartame (also known as Nutrasweet and Equal).

Lastly, buy local produce whenever you can.  Most of the GMO crops are from large, industrial farms. By shopping at your farmer’s market or subscribing to a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) you will be able to avoid GM products and possibly save money at the same time.

Tomorrow I will post about the “plu” stickers we find on produce at the supermarket.  They can tell us quite a bit about what we’re buying!

Peace and greens,

Melissa

Arsenic in Rice – FDA to Further Investigate

Have you heard the news reports today regarding the alarming levels of arsenic found in rice?  Both white rice and brown rice are under further investigation by the FDA.  There are actually higher levels of arsenic found in brown rice because it still contains the bran (the outer shell).  As always everything in moderation and a varied diet is best. There is no need to stop eating rice, just be aware.  Here are some things you can do:

  • Wash rice thoroughly before cooking.  Rinse the rice until the water runs clear and then add new water to your pot before cooking.

Use a 6 to 1 water to rice ratio.

What’s the big deal about GMOs, Part 2

So, what are GMOs doing once they’re inside our bodies?

Evidence suggests that the huge rise in food allergies is due to the rise in GMOs. Think about your children’s classmates….how many are allergic to something?  My second graders each have a handful of kids with allergies in their classes, my son included.  I remember ONE child in my WHOLE elementary school with a peanut allergy!  What is going on here?  Beginning in 1996 bacteria, viruses, and other genes have been inserted into our soy, corn, canola, and cottonseed plants.  These plants bring on allergies because they have created a new protein that the body doesn’t recognize.  Our body then releases antibodies  into the bloodstream to fight this invader.  A typical allergic reaction occurs.  In extreme cases, it results in life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

GMOS have been shown to increase the body’s toxicity.  The more toxins in your body, the higher chance of obesity, cancer, and many other diseases.  Many researchers are beginning to see the link between GMOs and autism, asthma, and eczema in small children. Gastrointestinal conditions such as Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and ulcerative colitis have risen since 1996. Harvard researchers discovered how GMOs are linked to disease of the gut.  To read about this study click here http://howtoeliminatepain.com/crohns-disease/attention-crohn%e2%80%99s-and-ibd-sufferers-%e2%80%93-harvard-researchers-discover-the-obvious-about-how-genetically-modified-foods-lead-to-inflammatory-bowel-disease-crohn%e2%80%99s-and-ulcerative-c/

In lab tests, livestock ingesting GMOs became infertile in a matter of weeks.  Some of these animals have also become very ill and died very quickly.  So the GMOs aren’t working out very well as feed for the cows and pigs, but hey, maybe the humans will fare better?  Does this sound a little risky to you?  MUCH, MUCH more research needs to be done by unbiased labs to find out exactly what is happening when we eat genetically modified foods!

As of right now, our pantries and refrigerators are full of GMOs and we have no labels on any packaging to warn us of this.  If you want to read a good article about the links between GMOs and disease click here http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/02/07/colorado-bans-gmo-crops.aspx

Tomorrow we will continue with what you can do to ensure that you are getting the GMOs out of your kitchen and out of your body!  If  you are feeling a need to do something right now, please sign the petition to get labels on our food products warning us of the GMO ingredients.  Click here to do so http://justlabelit.org/take-action/
