Thanks to those of you who came out for our heart health workshop yesterday! We enjoyed it and hope that you were able to take away a tidbit or two to help grow a stronger heart. For the rest of our readers, near and far, we would like your tickers to benefit as well! We will share a portion of our workshop here in 3 parts.
First, some facts:
One in 3 Americans will die of heart disease….2200 every single day.
Heart disease kills more women than the next four causes of death combined, including all cancers.
In women under 50, a heart attack is more than twice as likely than a man’s to be fatal.
Heart disease is almost 100 percent preventable!
One cause of heart disease is stress. Stress raises our blood pressure, damages our arteries, causes irregular heart rhythms, and weakens our immune systems. The problem is, who ISN’T stressed out about something these days? The key here is how you manage that stress. Make sure that you are doing something to help alleviate it. Getting enough sleep and eating whole, healthy foods will help to reduce the effects of stress on the body. Regular exercise, breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, a hobby you enjoy, spending time with good friends…whatever works to help you let go of stress is important to incorporate into your daily routine. It’s all too easy to put ourselves last. The kids, the spouse, sometimes even the dog, get all of our time and attention. At the end of the day we realize we’ve run from school, to work, to soccer, fixed dinner, helped with homework, and not had a moment for ourselves. But carving out 30 minutes a day to exercise or to spend time pursuing a hobby we enjoy is actually doing something for those we love as well…adding precious healthy years to our lives!
