Time to Clean

Clean our bodies that is!  I know we have referred to “The Clean” a few times in our posts and the time has come around once again for us to remove, restore, and rejuvenate!  There are lots of detox programs out there, many very unhealthy, and “cleaning” isn’t for everyone.  We don’t want to freak anyone out or scare anyone away!  But here’s the thing, once you have tried this program, you will feel AMAZING!  If you can make it through the first week, it becomes fairly routine, not too difficult, and the benefits you are feeling far outweigh all else.  We wouldn’t be doing it for the third year in a row if it didn’t work!  Both our husbands get on board and do the Clean with us to pretty spectacular results.  So, don’t go running from your computer, let’s go over the basics and then you can decide what you think.

The Clean program we are referring to is based on the book “CLEAN” by Alejandro Junger, M.D.  Dr. Junger developed this program after moving here from Uruguay.  He arrived in the United States a young, healthy, cardiologist.  After eating like Americans for a couple of years he became pretty sick.  He did tons of research, “cleaned” up his eating, developed this plan, and got his healthy body back.  He tells his story at great length in the book and it’s a fascinating read.

Dr. Junger recommends easing into the Clean by eliminating certain foods from your diet for the first couple of weeks and then starting the 21-day program when your body is a little better prepared. If you are a pretty healthy eater and have done this before, you don’t need to ease in quite so much. I am starting this week by just getting off the sugar. Sugar coma anyone?  OMG, I feel like I have had sugar all day long for the last 3 weeks!  It has zapped my energy, made my skin very unhappy, and my jeans a bit tight. Yuck!  So when eliminating sugar, I mean zero, nada, zip!  Sugar is hidden in everything from tomato sauce to bread and crackers. It is disguised with names like dextrose, sucrose, corn syrup, and many others.  Satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit for a few days and see if you feel any different. If you’ve been having candy, cookies, Starbucks yummy holiday coffee drinks, etc on a daily basis, you may even have a headache for the first day without it.  In just the 3 or 4 days that I have lived without it I feel much better.

The Clean is about getting the toxins out of our bodies so that our immune systems can hum along the way they are supposed to. If you get colds or viruses every winter, recurrent indigestion, constipation, or irritable bowel syndrome, itchy skin, depression, anxiety, or frequent fatigue, I urge you to give this a try.  You will be truly glad you did. Oh, and did I mention that if you have any extra holiday pounds that happened to find a home on your behind…well, they will just melt right off.

or read up on the website here…http://www.cleanprogram.com/.  The Clean is done one of two ways.  Andrea and I have always read the book and followed the guidelines and recipes. We also have fun coming up with our own recipes which we will share with you.  As you will see if you go to the website, Clean supplements and shakes are also available. Feel free to order those if you want to make it even easier to follow. I think they seem expensive. I enjoy making my own smoothies without a powder, and I hate supplements, so that just isn’t my thing. Whatever works for you is all that matters.
